Gifted Math in Grandview Heights
3rd Grade: This year we have extended classroom learning and also focused on the math process standards. I have seen much improvement in “perseverance in problem solving”. Students have gained strategies to help them attack difficult problems with confidence. Some advanced topics that we covered this year included multiplication and division of multi-digit numbers, logical thinking skills, number sense, fractional understandings, multi-step problems, patterns and spatial sense.
4th Grade:
CML results are in for Contest #5. The leaders through 5 matches (cummulative score) for 4th grade are Connor Hayes, Max Lauer, Nina Malec-Kosak, Keegan Kearney, Mikael Black, and Luke Clark-Moody. Great Job!!!
5th Grade: Students have been completing advanced, multi-step problems from the Continental Mathematics League. 5th Graders are also extending the 5th grade standards of fractions to create recipes for trail mix.
5thA and 6th Grade: We are finishing up Geometry and Measurement. We continue to review topics that will be important for 7th grade math like proportions, expressions, and equations. The students have come so far this year:
CML Results: The leaders through 5 contests: Stephanie Kramer, Kieren Bode, Cate Stanley, Kenny Ramsey, and Adam Bechtel - Great Problem Solving!
Gifted Reading in Grandview Heights
Enrichment Reading students who participated in the Read to Feed service project raised over $1000 for Heifer International. The third graders worked hard to persuade other students to “vote” for their assigned animal. I hope everyone was able to enjoy the video clips the children made. The top votes went to the water buffalo, goat, heifer, honeybee, rabbit, and pig. Thanks to everyone who helped support the students’ work on this service project.
Fourth graders extended their classroom work by reading and writing additional poems using Jacob’s Ladder reading comprehension selections. Students learning about the early settlements in Ohio went “back in time” and consulted the Land Ordinance of 1785 to select a township section and a location in the state. Students analyzed the local rules and determined the best location for each of them to settle. The fifth graders are completing a theme project which they will share with classmates. They continue to build a strong understanding of Greek and Latin root words, suffixes and prefixes as they work through assignments on It’s Learning. What a great tool for self-paced instruction!
Middle schoolers enjoyed their visit to COSI and used what they learned to create some Rube Goldberg contraptions of their own. April and May will be wrap-up time for their independent study projects.

- expanding their knowledge of whole number operations to include rational numbers like fractions, decimals, and integers,
- Writing and solving equations to represent problem solving situations.
- Using proportional reasoning for problem-solving and percents
- Using mental math strategies for computation and number sense

Gifted Math
3rd Grade: Students have been working on multi-step problem solving and discussing strategies. We have been working on double digit multiplication with partial products and area models. Students are having much success and some have moved on to triple digit multiplication and long division. The group has also discussed and tried strategies for solving advanced logic puzzles with grids, balancing scales with fractions, and comparing fractions.
4th Grade: With pre-testing and formative assessments, students are demonstrating a variety of understandings of fractions. Mrs. Turner is working with small groups to teach and reteach and has advanced work for those who have demonstrated mastery of fraction standards. Please check www.eimsgifted.weebly.com under “Math for Students” “Fourth Grade” for the 4th grade standards and the advanced standards that some students are learning. There are also links to games that connect to the fraction standards.
CML results are in for Contest #4. The leaders through 4 matches (cummulative score) for 4th grade are Connor Hayes, Max Lauer, Luke Clark-Moody and Maria Sipes. Great Job!!!
5th Grade: Students have been completing advanced, multi-step problems from the Continental Mathematics League. 5th Graders are also extending the 5th grade standards of Coordinate Graphs to include interpreting graphs and making graphs with tables.
5thA and 6th Grade: We just completed the unit on writing and solving equations. We continue to work with this topic for the rest of the year as understanding will be so important for Pre-Algebra and Algebra. The next unit focuses on Proportional Reasoning - One of the Critical 6th Grade standards. Students will learn how to write proportions, use scale, evaluate missing measures on similar figures, and use proportions for percents.
CML Results are in for Contest 4: The leaders through 4 contests for 5h grade are Kieren Bode, Stephanie Kramer, Lydia Robinson, and Adam Bechtel - Great Problem Solving!
Gifted Reading in Grandview Heights
Enrichment Reading students who participated in the Read to Feed service project have raised over $300 for Heifer International. Students are contacting their sponsors to collect the pledges so we may raise a bit more. Thank you to everyone who helped support this project. Third graders are preparing their persuasive writing pieces to convince the older students which animals to donate, and voting takes place within the next 2 weeks. Parents will be able to see the students’ work on our It’s Learning course.
Fourth graders extended their classroom work by reading and writing additional myths. They also enjoyed related mythology activities in their online course and read from a selection of over 40 books. Students are moving into Ohio history and will compare primary and secondary sources as they learn about important events on the road to building a nation. The fifth graders are concentrating on a new project to develop their understanding of theme in literature and will be on the look-out for myriad examples of a theme they select. They continue to build a strong understanding of Greek and Latin root words, suffixes and prefixes as they work through assignments on It’s Learning. What a great tool for self-paced instruction!
Middle schoolers use deductive reasoning to solve logic problems ala Sherlock Holmes and soon will visit the International Exhibition at COSI. Watch for information coming home about that March 15 event. We will view the high school teams who are competing in a Rube Goldberg event and cheer for our favorite contraptions. Students are looking forward to independent study projects for the last quarter of the school year.
CML Results are in for Contest 4: The leaders through 4 contests for 6th grade are Ravi Kumar, Brian Wood, Leah Stamm, and Calvin Horning. The 7th grade Leaders are: Jing George, Cameron Snyder, Gabby Caito, and Micah Clark-Moody.
